I glanced at Akira, who had been sleeping through the entire free period after our last conversation. She must be tired… She ran so much. Her legs must be killing her, I thought.

The lunch bell rang. A few boys sprinted out of the classroom. Akira’s friends were hugging each other like they were separated by seven oceans.

I looked back at Akira. She hadn’t joined the chaos and was still sleeping peacefully. But peace never lasted long.

Riva and Kriti started calling her. She turned her head.

“I don’t want to go. Let me sleep,” she said.

“Don’t be lazy,” Kriti scolded.

Manya grabbed her water bottle and splashed her face.

“Shit,” Akira muttered, sitting up and rubbing her face with her hands.

“Now get up.” Akira shook her head.

“I told you, naa… I can’t even walk right now.”

“Akiraaaa…” the trio shouted, grabbing her hands to drag her along. But she held onto my bicep.

“Hush… I’m not coming with you all. Trust me, I’ll surely die if I walk to the canteen.” I looked down at her hands wrapped around my bicep.

“Okay, stay there.” They left. Akira waved at them and laid her head back down on the table. My heart started racing, and I tapped lightly over my chest.

“Aise kya dekh rahe ho?” she asked.

[What are you staring at?]

I shook my head and picked up my pen.

“I wanted to go with them.” She pouted. “I’m really hungry, but I don’t want to walk anymore,” she added, tapping her nails on the table.

I thought for a second, then opened my bag and pulled out my lunch box. I pushed it toward her.

“Mere liye?” she asked, pointing at herself—the same finger she had been tapping on the table.

[For me?]

I pressed my lips together and nodded. She sat upright, pulled her chair closer, and clapped her hands excitedly.

She opened the lunch box, unwrapped the parathas, and lifted the lid of a smaller box filled with paneer ki sabzi.

“Bhaag khul gaye!” she exclaimed, looking up with a grin, then attacked the food.

I suppressed a laugh at her antics.

“Um… sor-sollie,” she said between bites.

[Um… sorry-sorry]

“Come, come,” she gestured, inviting me to taste my own lunch. “Thank you so much,” she smiled as she closed the box after we finished eating.

“Ab mujhe haath bhi dhone jaana padega.”

[Now I have to go wash my hands.]

I smiled and grabbed my water bottle.

“Vaha tak toh chal sakti ho na?” I asked, pointing near the window—just one step away from our seat.

[You can walk up there, right?]

She nodded and got up. I held her hands and poured water on them.

“Rub it.”

“Huh?” Her eyes widened in horror. I tapped her head.

“Budhu, rub your hands.”

[Idiot]

“Ohh…” she laughed nervously and started rubbing her hands while I poured water. I then set the bottle aside and cleaned her hands with a handkerchief.

“Bachi nahi hoon mai.”

[I’m not a kid.]

“Lag toh rahi ho par.”

[But you look like one.]
